SOHO Community Association - June/July 2021

 It is a time for transition for the SoHo Community Association. James Shelley, who has been serving as the president of the community association since February 21, 2019, is moving out of the neighbourhood and therefore stepping down from the board. Upon his resignation, Jessica Justrabo, who was elected Vice-President on February 21, 2019, has assumed the role of Acting President, effective June 23, 2021. Soho Community Association Board Transitions Jessica will continue to work with Laurie Bursch (Treasurer) and Leia Beland (Secretary) as acting president until such a time as pandemic restrictions allow for community elections to be held safely in order to appoint a new president. In February 1883, a new, four-room school opened on Grey Street – although the front door of the school actually faced Hamilton Road. This school replaced an earlier public school on Colborne Street. Continue reading → At 2 a.m. on May 25, 1905, one of London’s most spectacular fires lit up the skies of downtown London. That fire was at Dyment-Baker Lumber, on the northeast corner of Bathurst and Wellington Streets. Before the fire was contained, some 10 hours later, it also damaged much of the London Machine Tool Company; lumber at the nearby Tambling and Jones yard, and six Michigan Central Railroad freight cars. The heroine is Jane Prior of 87 Wellington Street who apparently exuded such a sense of calm that she stopped a raging bull in its tracks. Continue reading →  Association News – Upcoming Election for President Resignation of Cheri McLeod  With a heavy heart, we would like to announce that Cheri McLeod has decided to step down as President of the association. Cheri has been with us since November, and although her tenure has been short, it has definitely had a tangible impact upon our neighbourhood.  Cheri’s resignation will be effective pending the appointment of a replacement.
